MediaCore supports the STIR/SHAKEN standards

STIR/SHAKEN

Every month, between 3 and 5 billion automated phone calls are made. Research estimates that more than 40% of those calls are likely to be tied to some kind of fraudulent activity. To overcome the influx of unwanted calls in the service provider’s network, the industry has created two new standards: STIR/ SHAKEN. When combined, they create the framework that ensures every SIP-signalled call has a certificate of authenticity attached to it in the form of a digital signature.

What does it mean?

STIR  stands for Secure Telephone Identity Revisited

SHAKEN, on the other hand, stands for Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using tokens.

Above all, the two new standards have been developed by the industry to combat the growing number of unwanted calls that are being received by service providers.

In simple terms, STIR/SHAKEN is a carrier-based Caller ID authentication standard that verifies that a call originated from the number displayed on the Caller ID and was not manipulated.

There are three levels of attestation:
A. Full attestation.
B. Partial attestation.
C. Gateway attestation.

With this in mind, our partners can feel at ease knowing that MediaCore will support level C Gateway Attestation with the new release of the platform, as part of the STIR/SHAKEN standard.
